2 churches, 1 mission: Celebrate Garden Hills

CHAMPAIGN — For one afternoon, members of churches representing two different denominations and cultures got together for the betterment of children in Champaign's Garden Hills neighborhood.

Jericho Missionary Baptist Church hosted members of New Horizon Methodist Church for a "Dare 2 Care" back-to-school block party.

Boys and girls played basketball, had their faces painted and enjoyed hot dogs and snow cones.

Members of the churches presented back-to-back 30-minute concerts for all to enjoy.

And 300 children received book bags packed with school supplies contributed by the two worship communities.

"We thought it was important that we got together members of two different denominations featuring two different styles of worship to make a positive impact on the Garden Hills community," said Jericho Pastor Lekevie Johnson.

Johnson and New Horizon Pastor Mark Jordan, along with worshippers from the two churches, had been planning the joint event for a month, Johnson said.
